From left to right: Anna Kecyk, Dr. Ihor Kharchenko and Mykola Lajszczuk

During a celebratory evening held at the Embassy of Ukraine in London tonight, two leading figures within the Ukrainian community in the UK were honoured with awards for their services to Ukraine.

Anna Kecyk from Rochdale and Mykola Lajszczuk from Keighley received the awards from the Ambassador of Ukraine, Dr Ihor Kharchenko, for their tireless work in helping to secure recognition of the 1932-33 Holodomor as genocide within their respective local councils.  The awards were decreed by the President of Ukraine.

Ms Kecyk has served on the General Council of the Association of Ukrainians (AUGB) for almost 20 years whilst Mr Lajszczuk has been a pivotal member of his local AUGB Branch, serving it for many years as Chairman.  Both were born in this country.

The occasion was all the more special since it was also the 90th anniversary of the unification of Ukrainian lands - 22 January 1919.

The President and Board of Directors of the Association of Ukrainians extend their most sincere congratulations to both Ms Kecyk and Mr Lajszczuk on receipt of their awards.
