The AUGB sent out letters today calling on leaders of various European institutions to urge Ukraine's President and Government to immediately review the amended Law of Ukraine, № 3298-VI, ““on the perpetuation of Victory in Great Patriotic War 1941-1945" and the use of copies of the official flag of victory", which was ratified by President Yanukovych on 20 May 2011.

Affirming its full support of the representations made last week (18 May) by the Ukrainian World Congress in the same matter, the AUGB stressed that "there can be little doubt today about the symbolism of the Soviet flag - about the tyranny, repressions and mass-murders that took place under its auspices, or its incompatibility with European values for all fundamental freedoms, rights and democracy."

Later in the day, individual letters were sent out to almost all UK MEP's drawing their further attention to the matter and asking them to raise the issue in the European Parliament with the view to resolving to urge the President and Government of Ukraine:

1. To note previous declarations of the European Parliament, the PACE and OSCE denouncing all forms of past totalitarianism and

2. To publicly denounce all forms of Stalinism and flags/insignia representing Soviet totalitarianism (including the "Victory" standard which in reality represented subjugation and oppression) and

3. To review the adopted amendment of the Law of Ukraine, № 3298-VI, ““on the perpetuation of Victory in Great Patriotic War 1941-1945" and the use of copies of the official flag of victory".
