The 25th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster was last night commemorated at AUGB's Central Office with the opening of an exhibition of original photographs from the collection of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine (NMHU).

The venture was prepared under the auspices of the AUGB and the Ukrainian Embassy (UE) in London and was addressed by Minister Councellor of the UE - Andriy Kuzmenko, General Director of the NMHU -Serhiy Chaikovsky, AUGB President - Zenko Lastowiecki, Chair of the Chornobyl Relief Foundation in the UK -  Tetiana Pereverzeva and Air Ukraine International representative - Valentina Sokolovska.  A musical tribute to the victims of the Chornobyl catastrophe was performed by members of the "Zhavir" group.

Speeches looked back at the sacrifices of individuals and the genetic damage to nationalities affected by the disaster... In the words of UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, everyone present remembered those "who lost their lives, quite literally, saving the world" and looked to the future... the recovery and redevelopment with lessons learnt (from both Chornobyl and Fukushima Daiichi)... and the need for international standards for construction of Nuclear Power Plants, agreed public safety, full transparency and information sharing among countries.

The exhibition will run until 3 June 2011.  For further details please see:
