So what did happen in the local elections that took place in Ukraine last Sunday?  Actually, it is still a bit too early to say.  In fact the final official results are unlikely to be out for another few more days.

It hasn’t all been quiet though.  There were no shortage of claims and counter-claims about vote-rigging!!!  At stake are all of the country’s Mayoral posts and seats in local assemblies.

To bring you up to speed, here are a few relevant links:

RTT News  and Reuters confirm that Yanukovych appears to have consolidated his grip on power amassing around 36% of the total vote.

Whilst a representative of the Interparliamentary Assembly of CIS Nations has apparently openly declared the local elections "transparent and corresponding to international norms" even before the polls had closed, a quick visit to its website reveals that no formal statement has yet been made.

Meanwhile the European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity reported on the opposition’s claims of mass irregularities whilst Kyiv Post reproduced Interfax Ukraine’s article citing opposition claims that the local elections in Ukraine undemocratic and the results distorted. KP also gave considerable prominence to OPORA’s report on the elections, which included a link to an article about a suspicious attack on OPORA's website.

President Yanukovych, on the other hand, has called on everyone to work together for the welfare of "a better country".

You can of course read up on these and more about the elections by visiting our press links page which provides links to many more news stories coming out of Ukraine!
