Mayor of Keighley addresses guests in Keighley Town Hall Council Chamber

Anastasia Andriyasczuk

On the morning of the arrival of the Torch, Mykola Lajszczuk, Peter Szczur and Stefan Pryimuk from AUGB Keighley Branch were interviewed for 20 minutes on BCB (Bradford Community Broadcasting), to discuss the importance of the Torch to Ukrainians all over the world.

Over 60 people from the Keighley Ukrainian community welcomed the Torch of Remembrance.

Mykola Lajszczuk welcomed Askold Lozynskyj, President of the World Congress of Ukrainians, and Vladislav Rohoviy, Cultural Attache from the Ukrainian Embassy, who were escorting the Torch on it's journey around Great Britain.

The Torch was taken to Keighley Town Hall Council Chamber, where everyone had congregated for the official welcome.

Guests were welcomed in the Ukrainian tradition with bread and salt by Anastasia Andriyasczuk, one of the oldest members of the Ukrainian Community.

After short addresses from Askold Lozynskyj and Vladislav Rohoviy, the Torch was handed to the Mayor of Keighley, who, with other council members, then signed the Book of Remembrance. The Mayor said that he was very proud to be associated with Ukrainians and would be attending the National Service of Remembrance in London on 22 November.

The Lords Prayer was sung in Ukrainian and then the Torch was taken to Town Hall Square, where a cross of flowers was laid on the War Memorial. Ian Wilson of the British Legion recited the moving words from the traditional Remembrance Sunday service, “ Age shall not wither them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we shall remember them.” The commemoration ended with the Ukrainian National Anthem.

The cross of flowers was left on the memorial, together with an explanation of its significance to the Holodomor, the genocide famine of 1932-33.
