AUGB STATEMENT ON THE CLOSURE OF ITS HALIFAX BRANCH

10.12.19

It is with sadness we confirm that the members of the Halifax Branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, have decided that the Branch building will permanently close its doors on 31 December 2019.

The Ukrainian centre in Halifax has a long and rich history, with members from across the country holding fond memories of its events, people and community spirit. Sadly, a decline in membership and support for the centre has made its future unviable, in spite of the tireless efforts of people in the community and financial support from the AUGB Central Fund.

AUGB has long supported the community in Halifax, and will continue to support it through this difficult time and we are pleased that neighbouring Branches have already also offered their support.

Moving forward, the enduring goal of the Association will be to support, promote and grow the Ukrainian community here in the UK as has done for almost 75 years and will always seek to work in its best interests. As is the standard procedure, the net proceeds of the building sale will be transferred to AUGB’s Central Fund, where it will be used to support and develop our communities and our Association.

In the last five years alone, the AUGB Central Fund has assisted 10 of our 25 Branches, including in the form of loans for building improvements, grants for community cultural groups or to support publications and events of Ukrainian historical or cultural significance in Great Britain and Ukraine. These contributions can be found in AUGB’s annual reports which have always been available to all members.

Finally, we recognise that it is people, not bricks and mortar, that create flourishing communities, and we thank the Branch committee, AUGB members and supporters in Halifax for their hard work to maintain their community over many years. We hope they continue to be proud members of the Ukrainian community at their neighbouring centres in Yorkshire and across the UK, where they will always be welcomed with open arms.
