23 November:  Mayor of Rochdale, Cllr. Billy Sheerin, Tony Lloyd MP and Rochdale Borough Councillors joined AUGB Rochdale Branch and Ukrainians from nearby towns and cities to commemorate the victims of the 1932-33 Holodomor in Ukraine.

A Service of Remembrance was held at the Holodomor Memorial following a procession from the Town Hall led by the Ukrainian flag.

The Holodomor Memorial was erected in Rochdale’s Memorial Gardens 10 years ago thanks largely to the dedicated work of councillors Irene Davidson and Angela Coric, who also led the campaign for Rochdale Borough Council to recognise the Holodomor as genocide - the first Metropolitan Borough Council in the UK to do so.

The commemorative service was led by Rev. Benjamin Lysykanych (Ukrainian Catholic Church) and Rev. Mark Coleman (Church of England) and included a wreath laying ceremony by Rochdale’s Mayor, Tony Lloyd MP and Chair of AUGB Rochdale Branch, Olga Kurtianyk.

A small exhibition about the Holodomor was also on display in the Town Hall during the day.
