BBC ADOPTS 'KYIV' IN PLACE OF 'KIEV'

16.10.19

The Association of Ukrainians welcomes the BBC’s timely decision to adopt the Ukrainian language spelling of the capital of Ukraine - Kyiv in place of Kiev.

This is a logical step which follows on from the BBC ceasing to use the definitive article when referring to Ukraine (rather than “the Ukraine”) and referring to other Ukrainian cities by their Ukrainian spellings, e.g., Kharkiv, Lviv (instead of Kharkov, Lvov).

While this move may matter little to some BBC viewers, it is likely to be greeted by many Ukrainians as a sign of the country breaking yet another Russified shackle from its tragic past. http://www.bbc.com/ukrainian/news-49999939
