13.11.17

AUGB Chair Petro Rewko and Deputy Chair Iryna Terlecky represented AUGB at the World Congress of Ukrainians conference in Toronto, where they took part in presentations, panel discussions and meetings with Ukrainian diaspora leaders from all over the world.

A host of speakers spoke on topics as diverse as engaging the media, human rights and promoting academic study of Ukraine.

Dr Ulana Suprun gave a keynote speech on medical reforms in Ukraine and the need for continuing diaspora support for implementation of reforms. Another keynote speech was given by Philip Karber, ex US Marine commander and President of the Potomac Foundation on Ukraine's military tactics and successes, the development of one of the strongest and best motivated armies in Europe and the need for the West to support Ukraine and the security of Europe by providing weapons and technology to combat the threat from Russia.

Iryna Kluchkovska, Director of the International Institute for Education, Culture and Diaspora Relations (MIOK), spoke about the need to promote awareness of the Ukrainian diaspora’s work amongst students in Ukraine.

Presentations and discussion centred on combatting disinformation, strengthening academic study of Ukraine, using technology to develop new ways of teaching children Ukrainian language skills; creating systematic methods for expanding humanitarian and social aid to Ukraine; ways of developing diaspora institutions and organisations to add value and unite diverse sections of the community to maintain their heritage and work more effectively to help Ukraine; investment and economic development of Ukraine and how the diaspora can contribute knowledge and skills.
