This year marks the bicentenary of the birth of Ukraine’s national poet, Taras Shevchenko.

To celebrate this anniversary we plan to hold a number of events, the first of these being the National Jubilee Concert which will take place at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester on the date of Shevchenko’s birth, 9 March.

An advertisement and details about the concert have been appearing in recent issues of ‘Ukrayinska Dumka’.

1. General

The concert is open to everyone, particularly all Ukrainians who arrived in the UK from the mid-1940’s onwards and their descendants (and families) born in this country together with all Ukrainians who have arrived here since the late 1980’s. It is important that this anniversary is celebrated by us all as one Ukrainian family. We would ask all Ukrainians attending to wear ‘vyshyvka’.

2. Date, Time and Venue

Date: Sunday 9 March 2014. Time: 14:30 hrs. Venue: De Montfort Hall, Granville Road, Leicester LE1 7RU.

3. Programme

The programme will be conducted mainly in Ukrainian. However, to make the event accessible to as wide an audience as possible (Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian speakers alike), there will be a a running translation of the keynote address, musical recitals and readings of Shevchenko’s works projected onto a screen at the side of the stage.

The programme is likely to last approximately two hours. One of the highlights of the programme will be the poem and song to be performed by our children from all over the UK.

4. Tickets.

Admission to the Concert will be free but – for H&S reasons – entry into the hall will be by ticket only. We will however be grateful to everyone attending the event for voluntary contributions to help cover the costs associated with the hire of the hall, etc.

De Montfort Hall will shortly supply us with the tickets which we will send out to order. To help us distribute quickly, efficiently and to keep costs down, we will be asking everyone ordering tickets to send a SAE. Details will be posted on this website and on our facebook page as soon as wee receive the tickets.

There are a limited number of seats, approx. 1500. Distribution of tickets will be on a first-come first-serve basis and we are taking orders now. If you live close to an AUGB Branch, please order your tickets through the Branch since they will be making bulk orders to speed up the ticket distribution process.

5. Getting there and parking

We have encouraged AUGB Branches to investigate the possibility of hiring coaches to carry people to and from the event. Coach Drive, the path running alongside the park, has now been booked for parking coaches and there will be a steward on the gate to facilitate the parking.

For people wishing to travel by car, there will be a public car park available to be either booked in advance or on the day at a cost of £3. This car park has 92 spaces but there is additional parking in the pay and display car park on Victoria Park. Tickets for the De Montfort Hall car park can booked in advance by calling the hall’s box office on 0116 2333111.

De Montfort Hall also has 19 disabled parking spaces at the front of the Hall. These spaces are free for anyone who has a blue badge and can also be booked in advance from the hall’s Box Office.

Anyone arriving by train should simply consult a map. The Hall is about 10-15 minutes walk from the train station.

6. Arriving early?

AUGB Leicester Branch will be opening its doors from 10.00 am on 9 March. It will be pleased to welcome all visitors arriving early for the concert (or staying afterwards). Food and drink will be available both before and after the concert. The Branch address is: 2a Fosse Road South, Leicester LE3 0QD.

7. And finally…

This is a unique occasion and we very much look forward to seeing you there.
