Patriarch Huzar, the Papal Nuncio, the Archbishop of Wesminster, the new Apostolic Administrator for Ukrainian Catholics in Britain, bishops and clergy after the Divne Liturgy

The Permanent Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, headed by Patriarch and Cardinal Lubomyr Huzar, took place in London last week.  The three day meeting discussed matters concerning the Church’s mission in Ukraine and abroad and issues regarding this year's Patriarchal Synod of Bishops, which will take place in Ukraine between 29 November and 9 December.

Participants met with priests and representatives of various organizations in this country and bishops Ihor Voznyak and Wasyl Semeniuk also visited Ukrainian communities in Manchester and Bradford respectively.

The culmination of the Permanent Synod took place at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral on Sunday when, during a celebration of the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Hlib Lonchyna was installed as the new Apostolic Administrator for Ukrainian Catholics in Great Britain.  The service was attended by the Papal Ambassador to the UK, Archbishop Faustino Sainz Munoz,  and the Archbishop of Westminster, the Most Rev. Vincent Nichols.  Also in attendance was the Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Ukraine in London, Mr Viacheslav Yatsiuk.

Cardinal Huzar addressed the congregation with a very moving message about practicing the faith and implementing Christian values into everyday life. He marked the day and the occasion by giving the Ukrainian Cathedral in London an ornate carved wooden crucifix made Ukraine.

Bishop Hlib thanked everyone for all their prayers and support and stressed that his main mission in this country is to serve everyone.  In turn he asked everybody to help him to fulfil this task.

He was greeting by many parishioners and then later in the day, various representatives publicly expressed their further sincere messages of congratulations and good wishes.  Among the speakers were the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Faustino Munoz, Mr Viacheslav Yatsiuk of the Embassy of Ukraine, Rev. Ivan Dacko of the Religious Society of Saint Sofia, Rev. Yevhen Stasiuk of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox in Great Britain, a representative of the Melkite Greek Catholic community in London, Mr Zenko Lastowiecki of the Association of Ukrainians in GB and Ms Vera Rich.
