The annual commemorative concert dedicated to the works of Taras Shevchenko took place yesterday at the AUGB Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Rochdale.  

The choir of the local Association of Ukrainian Women (OUZh), conducted by Susan Solomczak, opened the concert with a recital of “Zapovit” (Testament) and during a further two appearances performed: “Poklin tobi Tarase”. “Reve ta stohne…”, “Spi Tarase”, “Perebendya” and “Tetche Voda”. Larysa Killoran, flute, provided the musical accompaniament.

Maria Kopczyk gave an illustated talk on Shevchenko monuments of which there are approximately 1,100 in 47 countries. A brief resume of Shevchenko’s biography was read out by Luba Lawrence.

Poems were recited by Oksana Forest ( “Rozryta Mohyla”), Maria Kopczyk and Olya Kearns (“Taras Shevchenko), Natalka Hewka (“Tarasovi Shevchenku”), Petro Duczak (“Ivan Pidkova” – translation by Vera Rich), Taras Melnyk (“Tarasova Nitch”) and schoolchildren: Harry Hoyle – “Dorohyy Tarase”, Ben Hoyle “Ya Malenkyy”, Danylo Vovkun “Meni Trynadtyaty Mynalo”.

During an interval images Shevchenkos artworks were projected onto a large screen.

AUGB Rochdale Branch Chair Bohdan Lisnyj expressed thanks to all organisers and performers and the event ended with the singing of the Ukrainian National Anthem.
