EU AND UK GOVERNMENT DISAPPOINTED AT TYMOSHENKO COURT DECISION

Tymoshenko appeal

The EU and the UK Government have expressed their disppointment that the Ukrainian High Court has upheld Yuliya Tymoshenko's sentence for abuse of office when she was Prime Minister.

They expressed their dismay that two important political leaders, Mrs Tymoshenko and Yuriy Lutsenko, will be unable to take part in the parliamentary elections in October because the Ukrainian judicial system does not meet European standards for fair and transparent processes.

Foreign Office Minister, David Lidington pledged to continue to press Ukraine to end selective justice and ensure that the opposition can take full part in the forthcoming elections.

This is yet another blow to Ukraine's democratic credentials which will continue to affect progress towards implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU. President Yanukovych has already said that while European integration is still an objective he will not pursue it at any price, while commentators point out that although his words are supportive towards Europe, his government is moving Ukraine towards closer ties with and dependence on the Russian-led customs union.
