PRESIDENT TO MEET 'INTELLIGENTSIA' ON LANGUAGE BILL

Hanna Herman, one of President Yanukovych's top advisers has confirmed that the President has received the language bill for signature. She said that he will have a meeting on 7 August with members of the 'intelligentsia' to analyse and consider views on the bill.

There is no news yet on who will be invited to the meeting. Ex-president Yushchenko had earlier proposed a commission of ex-Presidents to consider the language issue, Speaker Lytvyn has now registered a new draft language bill of his own, while academics and literary figures have been amongst the protesters against the current bill. And, of course, the President will need to take into account the views of the Head of Minorities Unit at the OSCE who, after a meeting last week with the bill's authors, issued a statement which said that the bill disproportionately favoured Russian over Ukrainian and was a threat to the cohesiveness of the nation.

Plenty for the President to think about - and plenty of opportunity for him to show whether he is a statesman with the interests of a cohesive sovereign nation at heart, or just a partisan politician...
