TURNING THE SCREW ON UKRAINE'S INDEPENDENT JOURNALISTS

23.07.12

Whilst the world's media turns its attention this week to the Olympic Games in London, Ukraine's authories continue to turn the screw on Ukraine's free press.

Last week the Kyiv Post reported on criminal cases being opened against two independent media outlets – the TVi channel and LB.ua website.

The moves provoked a public outcry with the authorities being accused of exerting yet more pressure on Ukraine's free press ahead of the Oct. 28 parliamentary elections.

Since then, events have taken a further turn for the worse.  The TBi channel has now been "accidentally turned off" and has been "accidentally replaced" by another channel, making it "impossible" for the TBi channel to be reinstated.  The LB.ua website has also been closed.  Both media outlets were critical of the authorities.

Another Kharkiv based TV cable channel, "Simon", which re-transmitted TBi programmes, has also been closed down.

The AUGB strongly condemns these moves by the authorities (irrespective of whether this has been done directly or indirectly!) and calls for the immediate reinstatement of all three media outlets.
