The leaders of the two biggest parties in the united opposition, Arseniy Yatseniuk and Oleksandr Turchynov today launched a campaign 'Ukraine against Yanukovych' and pledged to begin proceedings for the President's impeachment.

The basis for the impeachment proceedings include, violations of the Constitution, stifling democracy and subverting legal process to persecute opposition politicians. Independent monitoring agencies, including Freedom House and Amnesty International have repeatedly said that, under Yanukovych's Presidency, Ukraine's democracy has been on a downward spiral, with corruption increasing at all levels and the President accused of using parliament and the judicial system to consolidate his own power.

The election campaign officially starts on 30 July, with elections to Verkhovna Rada in October. Opposition parties have, in effect, started their election campaign early with a call for Ukrainian citizens to support the call for the President's impeachment. The opposition say that they are ready to take their case to the European and international courts if the Ukrainian Supreme Court refuses to hear the case.
