MANCHESTER COMMUNITY COMMEMORATES CHORNOBYL

26.04.09

The Panakhyda service conducted by Rev. Yaroslav Rij at the local Ukrainian Catholic Church

Ukrainians in Manchester held a special service to commemorate the known and unknown victims of the Chornobyl disaster.

It is 23 years since an explosion and fire at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant created one of the worst environmental and human disasters the world has ever known.  An area of about 100,000 square miles was contaminated and the environmental and health effects, particularly on children, will continue for many generations to come.
