UK'S FOREIGN MINISTER FOR EUROPE LETTER TO AUGB

24.05.12

Following the pubication of its statement on Euro 2012, the AUGB wrote to the Uk's Foreign Minister for Europe, the Rt Hon David Liddington MP.

The following is the text of his reply:

Thank you for your letter of 3 May on the Euro 2012 Championships.

This is a sensitive issue where we need to balance the need to keep politics away from sport and our concerns about the treatment of Yulia Tymoshenko and other opposition politicians. lt is right for the tournament to go ahead in Ukraine and we hope that all participating nations and their supporters have a safe and successful tournament.

We still hope Ukraine will respond to the EU's growing concerns about the state of democracy in the Ukraine - not just for the sake of Euro 2012, but to ensure that Ukraine can take the steps necessary to continue its integration with, and ultimately to join, the EU. However, the EU is united in its concern about the treatment of some opposition politicians.

We respect the decision of every individual country as to their level of attendance at Euro 2012 matches. Whilst the England football team will participate, the potential attendance by UK Ministers is under review while we assess how the Ukrainian authorities are responding to our concerns.

We wish both Ukraine and Poland the very best as co-hosts of Euro 2012 and hope those attending, piayers and supporters have an enjoyable experience.
