PREPARATIONS AFOOT FOR UKRAINIAN WEEK IN BRADFORD

AUGB in Bradford has been working with the City Council’s Civic Affairs Office to organise a programme of events to celebrate the presence of Ukrainian communities in the Bradford district for the last six decades.

This programme will be known as “Ukrainian Week” and will last from Saturday 18th April until Sunday 26th April. A full programme of events has been arranged for the week and will include exhibitions and a variety of workshops and ending with a concert on Sunday 26th April.

Saturday 18 April:  The week will be opened officially by the Lord Mayor of Bradford with the opening of an Exhibition of Ukrainian arts and craft in the school hall of the Ukrainian Community Centre in Bradford at 15.30. This exhibition will be open daily from Monday 20 April until Friday 24 April 2009 from 14.00 until 19.00 with the exception of Tuesday when it will be closed. There will also be an opportunity to view the exhibition before and after the concert on Sunday 26 April.

There will be no more official activities over the week-end (Ukrainian Easter week-end) but people are welcome to attend celebrations at both the Ukrainian Catholic Church on Park View Road in Bradford and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church on Stony Lane, Eccleshill in Bradford where Easter baskets will be blessed on Saturday and Easter Mass celebrated on Sunday followed by a performance (weather permitting) of “Hahilky”(Ukrainian Spring Dance) after the service at the Catholic Church on Sunday 19 April.

Monday 20 April:  The full Holodomor Exhibition, brought from Kyiv, will open at Bradford Cathedral, 1 Stott Hill.  This exhibition will remain at the Cathedral until 5 May and will be open daily for public viewing.

There will be a Dancing workshop in the main hall of the Ukrainian Community Centre from 19.00-21.00h. This is open to 5-16 year old and there will be an opportunity to watch a dancing practise in progress followed by the opportunity to learn some dancing steps and try on some costumes.

Wednesday 22 April:  A range of workshops will run in the main hall of the Ukrainian Community Centre from 12.00 until 19.00h.  Workshops will include:

  • Ukrainian cuisine(including the traditional Easter breakfast)
  • Egg Decorating(Pysanky)
  • Ukrainian Embroidery
  • Ukrainian Musical Instruments
  • There will be opportunities for hands on experience during these workshops.
  • The Lord Mayor of Bradford will attend between 15.30 and 16.30.

Thursday 23 April:  There will be a Dancing workshop in the main hall of the Ukrainian Community Centre from 20.00-21.00. This is open to 16+ year olds and there will be an opportunity to watch a dancing practise in progress followed by the opportunity to learn some dancing steps and try on some costumes.

Saturday 25 April:  There will be a Civic Reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Bradford at City Hall. This is only for a limited number of the Ukrainian Community and not open to the public.

Sunday 26 April:  The week will close with a Grand Concert in the main hall of the Ukrainian Community Centre in Bradford. The concert will begin at 17.30 and will feature the full Krylati Dance Ensemble from Bradford.

Exhibitions and workshops throughout the week will be free of charge but there will be a nominal charge of £2 and £1 for the concert.
