COMMEMORATING HOLODOMOR IN ROCHDALE

26.11.11

About 70 people gathered at Rochdale Town Hall yesterday to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the “Holodomor” in which some 7 million Ukrainians lost their lives.  Among the distinguished guests were the MP for Rochdale, Simon Danczuk, councillors Karen Burke, Irene Davidson and Jane Gartside, as well as former MP  Paul Rowen.  The Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church were both represented, as was the AUGB by its president Zenko Lastowiecki.

The participants processed to the nearby Holodomor monument, erected in 2009 and situated in the Memorial Gardens.  After a short speech, wreaths were laid by Mr Simon Danczuk MP, Mr Zenko Lastowiecki, Chair of the Friends’ Links Forum Mrs Irene Davidson and the former Mayor of Keighley Mr Mykola Lajszczuk.  A minute’s silence was followed by a short memorial service conducted by priests from both Ukrainian Churches.

The “Holodomor” commemoration then continued at the Rochdale AUGB Centre.  An audio-visual presentation highlighted the reasons behind the tragedy and explored ways in which it is commemorated, and later speeches were made by a number of the distinguished guests.  The event was well reported in local press.
