UKRAINIAN INTELLIGENTSIA CALLS FOR UNITY IN FACE OF "GAS BLACKMAIL"

19.01.09

During a meeting of the Executive of the Ukrainian World Coordination Council held on 15 January 2009, the Ukrainian intelligentsia adopted a statement in which it calls on Ukrainians in Ukraine and throughout the diaspora to unite in the face of what it terms the recent "gas blackmail".

The statement asserts that leadership of the Russian Federation deliberately manipulated  the recent cut in gas supplies to Europe in a bid to elicit a European backlash against Ukraine.  It claims that this was carried out in response to Ukraine’s independently minded internal and foreign policies, its attempts to join the EU and NATO,  its public recognition of the 1932-33 Holodomor as genocide against the Ukrainian nation, the Orange Revolution and all that it stood for....

The Ukrainian intelligentsia contends that the Kremlin also tried to use the gas crisis to agitate the population of Eastern and Southern Ukraine to hold anti-state demonstrations in an attempt to further deepen the existing political turmoil in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian state is in danger, says the statement.  It calls on all democratically minded Ukrainians to unite under one national idea/movement - akin to the Rukh movement formed 20 years ago.  “Ukrainians should unite with Ukraine’s current leadership, demand that it puts an end to its internal blame-culture, and (that we all) seek (to secure) political unity, understanding and agreement”.

The statement concludes by citing Taras Shevchenko’s plea made in his “Friendly Epistle”:  “Brothers, then, embrace each other, I entreat and pray you!”.
