Twenty years of Ukraine's Independence was marked with a celebratory concert at the Ukrainian AUGB Centre in Rochdale yesterday.

The programme included performances by the local choir of the Association of Ukrainian Women /AUW/ (conducted by Susan Solomczak and   accompanied by Larysa Killoran on the flute) and the Ukrainian Youth Association dance ensemble “Sokil” from Stockport. Address reflecting on 20 years of the Ukraine's independence were delivered in English and Ukrainian by Taras Melnyk and Maria Bdzola.  There were also poetry recitals from Peter Duchak, Oksana Forest and Luba Lawrence.  At its conclusion, Maria Kopchyk thanked all performers and the audience for making the event so special and all participants then movingly sang the full three verses of Ukraine's National Anthem.

During refeshments, which were later served by members of the AUW, one person was overheard saying to her friend, “At that moment I really felt I was in Ukraine!”
