MORE MOVES TO RECOGNISE HOLODOMOR

Bradford
22.12.08

Following the Holodomor commemoration held in Bradford on 23 November, the local AUGB Branch Chair, Orysia Chymera, presented a petition regarding recognition of Holodomor to the leader of Bradford Council, Cllr Kris Hopkins.

On 2 December, she attended a Council meeting accompanied by Dr Andriy Chymera, during which they presented their case and further signatures to the petition.

The motion to place the petition for consideration by the Council's Executive (Cabinet) was moved by Cllr Hopkins and seconded by Cllr Ian Greenwood (leader of the Labour Group). Council members voted unanimously to have the petition considered during the next meeting of the Council Executive (in approx 4-6 weeks time).

Mrs Chymera held a further meeting last week with Cllr. Ian Greenwood who, in supporting AUGB Bradford's proposal, has agreed to move a motion calling on Bradford Council to recognise Holodomor as genocide.  If successful, a similar motion will then be presented to Parliament.
