HOLODOMOR COMMEMORATIONS IN EDINBURGH

28.11.08

The 75th anniversary of the Holodomor was commemorated at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Our Lady of Pochayiv and St Andrew in Edinburgh on Sunday 23 November 2008. The Sunday Liturgy at 11 am was followed by a special Panakhyda in memory of the millions of innocent Ukrainians who were forcibly starved to death in 1932-33.

Participants held a candle in memory of the victims to display solidarity with Ukrainians throughout the world who were also commemorating this
anniversary.

Over 80 Ukrainians and their families including those who came to Scotland in 1947 and in more recent times attended.

Speeches were made by the Ukrainian General Consulate in Scotland Mr Bohdan Yaremenko, who also read out a message from the President of Ukraine to those Ukrainians commemorating this tragic event in the Diaspora, and by Branch Chairman Stefan Tymkewycz and Branch Secretary Alex Kuryluk. The final message was given by Father Lyboyr Pidlutski.

All of those who spoke came to the same conclusion – that the tragic historical events of 1932-33 in Ukraine and the victims of these events should never be forgotten.
