UWC URGES UKRAINIAN AUTHORITIES TO REVERSE RADIO DECISION

27.05.11

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) has written to the President of Ukraine, Prime Minister, Chair of the Ukrainian Parliament and the Head of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting in Ukraine expressing grave concern over the decision of the General Director of the National Radio Company of Ukraine to close down the Ukrainian language section of Radio Ukraine International

The UWC points out that Radio Ukraine International's Ukrainian language broadcasts reach an audience of more than 20 million in the Ukrainian diaspora, thus helping to satisfy the informational and spiritual needs of the worldwide Ukrainian community.  It also helps to promote Ukraine’s image as a European state with enormous intellectual, scientific, technological and educational potential.

Referring to key state documents setting out Ukraine’s commitment to meeting the national, cultural and language needs of Ukrainians living outside of Ukraine, the UWC urges the Ukrainian authorities to reverse the decision to close the Ukrainian language broadcasts.
