AUGB SUBMISSION TO FOREIGN AFFAIRS SELECT COMMITTEE

UK
01.03.11

Towards the end of January this year we reported that the BBC had announced that it would stop broadcasting in the Ukrainian language on April 1.

Last week the AUGB sent a Submission together with two annexes to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee which is carrying out a short inquiry into the implications for the BBC World Service of the proposed service closures and other reductions in World Service activity.  The Submission sets out the AUGB's concerns about the timing of the complete closure of BBC Ukrainian language radio broadcasts and the loss of all editorial control in London (over BBC Ukrainian language internet content).

Copies of the documents were also sent to various other bodies including the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, who was asked to "give consideration to have the proposed cuts to the Ukrainian Service reviewed and revised".
