UKRAINIAN WORLD CONGRESS CALL TO DENOUNCE THE UNDEMOCRATIC PRESSURE ON POLITICAL OPPONENTS IN UKRAINE

18.01.11

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) has called for the condemnation of politically motivated prosecutions in Ukraine with an appeal to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay, OSCE Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Janez Lenarcic, Chair of the European Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights Heidi Hautala, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg, Chair of the European Parliament Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee Pawel Kowal and Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty.

In its appeal the Ukrainian World Congress cited observations made in a resolution of the European Parliament on 25 November expressing "increasingly worrying signs of a lessening of respect for democracy and pluralism (in Ukraine), as evidenced, in particular, by the  treatment of some NGOs and individual complaints by journalists about pressure from their editors or the owners of their media outlets to cover or not cover certain events, as well as increased and politically motivated activity by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) and the misuse of administrative and judicial resources for political purposes."

The letter cites the United States Government's Statement on Investigation of Ukrainian Opposition Politicians, which noted that "although as a rule the U.S. Government does not comment on the specifics of individual cases, we have raised with the Ukrainian government our concern that while corruption should be pursued, prosecution should not be selective or politically motivated."  The UWC stressed that its concerns were being raised in a similar context but pointed out that with a few exceptions, the only senior officials being targeted by the authorities in Ukraine are individuals connected with the previous government.  This gives the appearance of selective prosecution of political opponents.

UWC President, Eugene Czolij, has called upon the international community to denounce all undemocratic pressure currently being exerted on political opponents in Ukraine.
