The BBC news website today carries a piece by the Ukrainian novelist Andrey Kurkov analysing President Yanukovych's first year in office. He describes the government's legal action against Yuliya Tymoshenko and other opposition politicians as a 'blitzkreig' which resembles nothing more than a campaign of 'corporate revenge'. He believes that Yanukovych's main motivation is creating a 'controlled democracy' similar to Russia's and staying in power at all costs. Kurkov asks whether continued economic hardship will further alienate Ukrainian people from politics, or spark popular protests and belives the latter is more likely.
