AMBASSADOR'S BLOG - KEEPING UKRAINIAN FAMILIES TOGETHER

It’s not often that we charge people to enter my house.  But we make an exception when we host a charity reception in support of the Ukrainian charity EveryChild.

Ukraine, like many other countries in Eastern Europe, continues to house large number of children in orphanages.  EveryChild, which was set up as the result of a UK initiative, aims to train social workers to work with families to try and ensure that families can stay together rather than being forced to place children in state care.  Britain has more than 190,000 not-for-profit organisations and the Embassy takes a close interest in the development of the voluntary sector in Ukraine.  We see charities like EveryChild as an important way both to help people and to deliver services together with the government.

The charity event at the residence goes well.  With a good turnout despite ghastly traffic conditions, the organisers raise an astonishing sum of money, thanks to their good organisation and the immense generosity of those attending.  We look forward to continuing our work with EveryChild and with other Ukrainian charities.

For more information and photos please check news on EveryChild’s web-site.
