UKRAINIAN AMBASSADOR NOT TO ATTEND NOBEL PRIZE CEREMONY

08.12.10

KYIV POST.  The official representative of Ukraine will not be able to attend the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony, which is traditionally held in Oslo (Norway), as he is to participate in a regular staff meeting in Kyiv.

In a comment to Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday, the director of the information policy department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Oleh Voloshyn, explained that the award is traditionally presented by the King of Norway, and the ambassadors of the countries accredited in Oslo are invited at this ceremony.

Due to the fact that Ukraine's Ambassador to Norway Oleksandr Tsvetkov, who has received the invitation, will be at this time at a staff meeting of the Foreign Ministry in Kyiv, Ukraine will not be officially represented at the ceremony, Voloshyn said, adding that according to the protocol, this invitation can not be transferred to anyone else.

The online website of The Guardian yesterday reported on China's "arm-twisting" to pursuade diplomats to stay away from the Friday's Award ceremony in Oslo, where the Chinese dissident and winner of the Nobel peace prize, Liu Xiaobo, will be honoured.  19 countries, including Ukraine, have heeded China's call and will not attend.

It does seem completely bizarre that a "staff meeting" in Kyiv should have been arranged to coincide with such a prestigious event, which this year in particular has hit the headlines worldwide!!!

Human Rights and human wrongs!!!
