WIKILEAKS: SOLZHENITSYN AND METROPOLITAN KIRILL ON RUSSIA (AND UKRAINE, NATO AND HOLODOMOR)

02.12.10

A newly released WikiLeaks cable purportedly classified in April 2008 by the US Ambassador in Moscow, William J Burns, details alleged separate conversations held between Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Metropolitan Kirill who criticized the decision to recognise Kosovo's independence and sharply condemned plans for Ukraine to move closer to NATO.

The document describes Solzhenitsyn as being partially paralyzed by a stroke, but alert and very engaged in current events, as demonstrated by his article on the Holodomor published in Izvestiya on 2 April 2008.  in the article Solzhenitsyn rejected the notion that the 1932-1933 famine in Ukraine was a an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people.

On the subject of NATO expansion, the cable states that Kirill was even sharper than Solzhenitsyn in his views on Ukraine.  According to Kirill, Ukraine was "not ready," and NATO membership could cause a split in that country's population, and create turmoil in Eastern Europe.
