UWC OUTRAGED BY BAN ON PUBLIC MEETINGS IN KYIV

23.11.10

The Ukrainian World Congress has expressed its concern about reports that Kyiv’s District Administrative Court yesterday banned all protest meetings planned to take place in the capital between 22-26 November.

The protest rallies were called after the Ukrainian Parliament adopted controversial new tax laws last week that were seen to be damaging to small and medium sized businesses. The business community is seeking to publicly call on the President of Ukraine, by means of public protest, not to ratify the new laws.

In its statement, the UWC stresses that the right to assemble and freedom of speech are fundamental democratic values.

UWC President, Ewhen Czolij, added that the decision of Kyiv’s Administrative Court “is a wake-up call not only for Ukraine but also for democratic society as whole, because such measures could ultimately lead to a return of an authoritarian system of government in Ukraine”.
