EU-UKRAINE SUMMIT TODAY - WHAT HOPES?

22.11.10

The EU and Ukraine will hold their annual summit at the Chateau Val Duchesse in Brussels today. According to euobserver.com, the headlline deliverable at the summit is expected to be an Action Plan on visa-free travel, with Ukrainian diplomats hopeful that they can meet EU demands to win such a prize in time for the Euro 2012 football championship, although it could yet take years.  Alongside these deliberations, the question of electoral standards and human rights in the country will be raised, with heavy lobbying by both the government and opposition in recent weeks on EU politicians and journalists pushing their perspectives.

In an article entitled East of the EU: turning balancers into joiners, which appeared yesterday on the website of The Guardian, Andrew Wilson explains why he believes that this year's EU-Ukraine Summit is like to showcase the failure of previous hopes.
