BURNS COLLECTION LAUNCHED IN KYIV

05.11.10

The National Museum of Print in Kyiv was the venue earlier this week for the launch of a unique book of Ukrainian translations.

“Robert Burns. Selected Works” is the result of the combined efforts of past President of Burns Howff Club in Dumfries, Peter Kormylo, and Hanna Dyka, a teacher of English and talented translator from Ukraine.  Its publication coincides with the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns’ birthday.

The launch took the form of an evening concert interspersed with readings and recitations from the co-authors.  Burns’ songs and melodies were provided by Taras Kompanitchenko and his traditionally dressed folk band “Khoreja Kozatska” playing on antique Cossack instruments and the Ukrainian folk group “Roun” from Kyiv, singing Burns' songs to the musical accompaniment of a Ukrainian bagpiper.

Guests included Kirsty Baxter from the British Embassy in Kyiv, former Ambasssador of Ukraine in the UK, Volodymyr Vassylenko and David Baird, President of the Robert Burns World Federation.

A parallel book launch is planned to take place in Scotland in January 2011.
