GERMANY'S FIRST FEMALE RABBI SINCE 1935 IS UKRAINIAN

04.11.10

A Ukrainian - Alina Treiger, born in Poltava in 1979 - will today be ordained as Germany's first female rabbi since 1935. Leading rabbis from around the world, together with the President of Germany Christian Wulff, will attend the ceremony, marking its historical importance. Many newspapers and other media carry more detailed reports, including interviews with Ms Treiger, who remembers her father being persecuted by the communist authorities in pre-independence Ukraine simply for being Jewish.

Ms Treiger will take up her rabbinical duties in Oldenburg, where many members of the Jewish community are from former Soviet republics. We wish her well in all her endeavours.
