EUROPEAN COUNCIL PRESIDENT MEETS UKRAINIAN PM

The European Council President, Herman van Rompuy, met in Brussels today with Ukraine's Prime Minister, Mykola Azarov. 

In his remarks following the meeting, Mr van Pompuy said that the two men had "touched on a broad spectrum of issues, ranging from regional developments to the numerous reforms recently implemented in the economic, energy and financial spheres."

The EC President added that "we had discussions on the recent decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the Ukrainian Constitution. The establishment of a democratic, effective and durable system of checks and balances should remain a priority. We also discussed the forthcoming local elections in Ukraine...  (and) acknowledged the importance of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights, our basic principles that we share and strive to implement...".

The Venice Commission is due to consider the Ukrainian Constitutional Court's recent Judgment on 15-16 October.
