UK MINISTER FOR EUROPE IN UKRAINE

The Minister for Europe, David Lidington, is in Ukraine today on a 24-hour visit. In interviews with the BBC and with the Ukrainian newspaper Den', he has made clear that Britain supports Ukrainian moves to join the EC, but also expresses his concerns about current political events. In particular, he quotes the recent PACE resolution which expressed concern about civil liberties, freedom of speech and the rule of law. There is also disquiet about recent Constitutional changes and the process of constitutional reform. Mr Lidington also highlighted the continuing difficulties for British businesses in doing business in Ukraine, where complex regulations and corruption are hampering progress. Mr Lidington says that he is also looking forward to Euro 2012 and a Ukraine- Great Britain final!
