MEDIA FREEDOM BATTLE GRIPS UKRAINE

Ukraine
02.08.10

“The World Today” programme broadcast earlier this morning on the BBC World Service carried a report by David Stern on a media freedom battle currently gripping Ukraine.

The piece conicides with an article published in today's issue of Komersant which worryingly reports on the Ukrainian Security Service homing in on a blogger and journalist, Oleh Shynkarenko.  The move has been condemned by the Chair of the Ukrainian Parliamentary Committee for the Freedom of Speech, Andriy Shevchenko, who labelled such action as illegal and indicated that it was a possible attempt by Ukraine's Security Service to suppress internet freedom in Ukraine.

The situation is being monitored closely by everyone, not least the UK’s FCO, which, amongst other things, is looking to Ukraine to build on the progress made over recent years on democracy, human rights and media freedoms.

Whilst reaffirming our full support of the FCO’s position, we urge everyone to consider writing to the Ukrainian Embassy in London to seek assurances that the Ukrainian President and Government will take immediate steps to stamp out all and any perceived threats to democracy, human rights and media freedoms (including internet) in Ukraine.
