THE TABLET PUBLISHES AUGB RESPONSE

28.07.10

Two weeks ago we wrote about an article published in The Tablet about Fr. Borys Gudziak's and his Memorandum, penned shortly after a visit from Ukraine's Security Service.

Under a sub-heading "University rector and secret agents", the newspaper's latest issue includes the AUGB's response to the article in the Letters to the Editor section:

"Jonathan Luxmoore (The Church in the World, 10 July) quotes criticisms, by the secretary general of the Ukraine's catholic bishop's conference, of Fr. Borys Gudziak, the rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University.  There was no suggestion in Fr. Gudziak's original statement that Ukraine's Secret Service attempted to recruit him as a "secret collaborator".  Surely then, in the interests of free and impartial journalism, Mr Luxmoore ought to have taken the time to ask Fr. Gudziak about the incident rather than simply seeking half-baked quotes from someone living over 300 miles away in a bid to discredit what was an otherwise extremely disconcerting development in Ukraine on 18 May - both for the Church and all educational establishments.
