DONATIONS FOR FLOOD VICTIMS CONTINUE BUT MORE RAIN PREDICTED

07.08.08

While cleanup operations continue in all areas of Ukraine affected by severe flooding, weather forecasters predict more heavy rainfalls over the Carpathian mountains.  Further downpours are also expected to hit all flooded areas on Saturday.

Much of Eastern Europe has experienced heavy rain since 22 July.  In Western Ukraine alone, 34 people have died.  UN experts have estimated the damage caused by the flooding in Ukraine at between $650-900 million.

The UK Department for International Development (DFID) has today replied to the AUGB's call for emergency help by saying that the DFID team dealing with Humanitarian issues continue to closely monitor the flood situation in Ukraine, Moldova and Romania.  The letter goes on to say that "we understand that Ukraine and Moldova have requested assistance through NATO and the EU for specific items of machinery such as generators and kit houses.  DFID does not plan to respond directly to the flooding as we believe NATO, the EU and others are better placed to provide a response in this instance".

Elsewhere in Britain donations continue to pour into the Flood Fund created by the AUGB last week.  So far over £13,000 has been raised by the Ukrainian community in this country.

If you live in the UK and are able to help, please send your contribution to the AUGB, 49 Linden Gardens, London W2 4HG.  Cheques should be made payable to the "AUGB" and marked "Flood Fund" on the reverse.  Many thanks for your support!!!
