LETTER TO PM ON MONUMENTS TO STALIN

UK
13.04.10

As indicated in a previous posting, the AUGB has written today to the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, expressing its concern regarding reports which indicate that there are serious moves to erect one or more statues to Josef Stalin in Ukraine.

The letter points out that “Ukrainians were not the sole victims of Stalin’s regime: millions of Soviet citizens were affected by his purges and in the past week we have, of course, been most poignantly reminded of the atrocities that took place in the Katyn Forest in 1940.”

It asks the Prime Minister to consider making representations to the Ukrainian authorities asking them to reflect carefully on the appropriateness of placing a monument (anywhere in Europe) to such a ruthless dictator.
