UK'S POSITION ON SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIA REMAINS UNCHANGED - THERESA MAY

01.08.16

According to the Ukrainian President’s website, Petro Poroshenko has held a telephone conversation with Theresa May during which he congratulated the UK's Prime Minister on her recent appointment and thanked the British Government for its unwavering support of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The press release further states that Prime Minister May confirmed that “the UK's position on sanctions against Russia remains unchanged: the sanctions must remain until the Minsk agreements are fully implemented” and that “Britain's strong commitment to the policy of non-recognition of Crimea's annexation by Russia”.

On 1 July the EU unanimously agreed to renew economic sanctions on Russia for a further six months, in line with the March European Council’s commitment that the duration of sanctions should be clearly linked to the full implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Last week, in reply to a question asked by Lord Maginnis of Drumglass,  Baroness Anelay of St Johns stated that “the EU remains united in its strategy of resolving the Ukraine crisis through diplomacy underpinned by robust sanctions pressure. The UK fully supports this policy and will continue to play a central role in calling for a firm response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine"
