AUGB URGES AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL TO PUBLICLY CALL FOR THE RELEASE OF NADIYA SAVCHENKO

28.09.15

In a letter to the General Secretary of Amnesty International, Salil Shetty, the AUGB has expressed its concern that the human rights watchdog has not adopted a strong public position in relation to the case of Nadiya Savchenko, who is languishing in a Russian prison and facing trial on trumped up charges.

The letter urges Amnesty International "to take a principled stand for Nadiya Savchenko: to acknowledge the political nature of the case against her and the numerous breaches of her human rights and publicly call for her release. Without continuing strong international pressure, Nadiya will not receive a fair hearing or the justice that she deserves."

The European Parliament has condemned Savchenko’s abduction and illegal detention and has called for her to be released and for those responsible for her prosecution to be subject to sanctions.
