STATEMENT BY AUGB GENERAL COUNCIL CALLING ON UK TO UPHOLD ITS OBLIGATION TO GUARANTEE UKRAINE'S TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY

28.08.14

Regular Russian troops have now openly invaded Ukraine making it abundantly clear that President Putin believes the West is too weak to pose any credible response to Russian aggression.

Furthermore, some 45,000 Russian troops backed up by heavy artillery have been deployed close to the Russia-Ukraine border awaiting the order to step up the invasion.

In the Budapest Agreement (BA) of 1994, the UK, amongst others, guaranteed Ukraine's territorial integrity in return for Ukraine giving up its nuclear arsenal.

The time has come for this country to revisit its commitments towards Ukraine in accordance with the detail and the spirit of that Agreement which, we should add, Ukraine fully adhered to.

There can now be very little doubt about Russia's intentions.

Now more than ever before, Ukraine's government and army needs the full tangible backing from all of the 1994 BA guarantors as its territorial integrity, independence and democratic future hang in the balance.

We call on the UK government to act with strength and resolve now: to freeze all Russian assets in the UK and EU and to provide urgent medical and military assistance to Ukraine's government. This is not just Ukraine's fight. For the sake of long term peace and stability in all of Europe, Russia's relentless aggression, lies and breaches of international law cannot and must not be tolerated any longer.
