On Sunday 29th November the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress of Kirklees Council, together with Councillors from all political parties attended the Ukrainian Centre to view the Holodomor Exhibition and learn at first hand of the atrocities perpetrated on the Ukrainian Nation by Stalin during the 19323-1933 Famine. The Exhibition was opened by Ivan Szolacz and was followed by a statement made by Steve Komarnyckyj from the Ukrainian Community in Huddersfield. Dr Siriol Colley, niece of the late Gareth Jones, then informed everyone of the famine which her uncle reported on at that time. Mykola Lajszczuk concluded by an impassioned request a Kirklees Council formally acknowledge Holodomor as Genocide against the Ukrainian Nation. The Leader of the Council, Councillor Khan, invited Mr Lajszczuk and the local community to formally present the Motion to Full Council on the 9th December.
