OPPOSITION CALLS FOR 3 DAYS MOURNING AS NUMBER OF DEAD RISES TO 77

The number of people killed since Tuesday in Ukraine has risen to 77.

After a day which saw protesters regain the whole of Independence Square in Kyiv with Berkut riot police openly shooting live ammunition at protesters, opposition leader held lengthy talks with Viktor Yanukovych. The full details of what has been agreed are still not fully known though according to the presidential website, Yanukovych has agreed to early presidential elections and a return to the Constitution of 2004.

Meanwhile there were angry scenes in Parliament this morning after Speaker Volodymyr Rybak tried to call a break in proceedings. Parliamentarians insisted that all discussions should be taken publicly in parliament and the session continued. Opposition leaders called for a vote on the reintroduction of the 2004 Constitution of Ukraine which will reduce the powers of the President. The law is currently being drafted. They also proposed a period of 3 days of mourning in memory of thise who were killed since Tuesday. 

Rybak signed a law adopted yesteday "condemning the use of violence which led to the death of civilians".
