PROTESTERS PUSH RIOT POLICE OUT OF INDEPENDENCE SQUARE

20.02.14

As EU Foreign Ministers begin talks today to consider the implementation of personal sanctions against indIviduals deemed to be responsible for violence in Ukraine, the landscape in the heart of Kyiv has changed overnight.

Protesters have forced Berkut riot police out of the Maidan (Independence Square) and are now erecting fresh barricades on Hrushevsky and Instytutsky streets.  The number of casualties are not yet known but early reports say that at least 10 protesters have died during this morning’s offensive.

Speakers have made announcements from the Maidan stage that Berkut have retreated back to Mariyinsky park which means that the protesters are within touching distance of Ukraine’s parliament building. The protesters have also been warned of snipers on roofs of buildings in the area.

The Ukrainian parliament and Cabinet of Ministers buildings are reported to have been evacuated and there is little sign of the parliament being protected.

There are also reports that some riot-police are defecting onto the side of the protesters.
