UPDATED: RESIGNATION ACCEPTED - UKRAINE PM AZAROV TENDERS RESIGNATION

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has this evening formally accepted the resignation of PM Mykola Azarov and his government with immediate effect.

The announcement has been published on the president's website..

Yanukovych has instructed the cabinet to continue in post until a new government is formed. 

Earlier in theday, Azarov said in a statement published on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers that he has decided to step down to "create additional opportunities for a socio-political compromise and settle the conflict peacefully".

He continued by saying that "during the confrontation the government has done everything to resolve the conflict peacefully. We have done and are doing everything to prevent bloodshed, the escalation of violence and the violation of human rights. The government ensured the functioning of the economy and the system of social security in extreme conditions... During all these difficult years I did everything to ensure that Ukraine could develop normally as a democratic European state."
