27.01.14

Ukraine's Justice Minister Olena Lukash warned protesters this morning that she may call for state of emergency becasue of demonstrators breaking into and occupying the ministry's building late last night. Several dozen radical protesters from a group named Spilna Sprava (Joint Cause) seized control of the justice ministry after smashing windows and erecting barricades outside.

Lukash told Ukraine's Inter channel: "I am a member of the working group to find a solution for the current situation. And I will be forced to address the president of Ukraine and ask him to stop the talks unless the building of the Ministry is freed immediately and the participants of the talks are given a chance to find a peaceful resolution of the conflict."

She went on to say: "If the Justice Ministry building is not freed, I will be forced to address my colleagues, members of the Council of Security and Defence and ask them to discuss introducing a state of emergency in the country."

UDAR opposition party leader Vitaliy Klitschko met with the activists but was unable to persuade them to leave the building.

UPDATED AT 1800 KYIV TIME: Protesters have left the Ministry of Justice which they occupied yesterday. This removes any justification for violence or any calls for a state of emergency. See here.
