YANUKOVYCH TRIES TO PAPER OVER CRACKS BY OFFERING PREMIERSHIP TO YATSENIUK

26.01.14

Viktor Yanukovych has proposed a return to the 2004 Constitution and the posts of Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister to Arseniy Yatseniuk and Vitaliy Klitschko respectively.  However, he stopped short of agreeing to holding fresh Parliamentary and Presidential elections and equally rejected a proposal to revoke the package of undemocratic laws adopted on 16 January. Meanwhile the Minister for the Interior Zakharchenko advised all protesters demostrating in Independence Square in Kyiv to go home for their own safety.

During the day protesters continued to try and seize government buildings in various parts of Ukraine, including the Ministry of Energy.

Speaking to a mass gathering numbering tens of thousands in Independence Square late last night, opposition leaders said that they would not accept anything less than agreement to all demands.

Klitschko announced that "we demand presidential elections this year" while Yatseniuk emphasised that the opposition was not afraid of holding power.

Talks between opposition leaders and Viktor Yanukovych are set to continue.
